The “restructuring” of Amtrak will have consequences on both rail labor and passengers in the United States. Our concerns of privatization are unfolding in front of our very eyes. It is no secret that the federal government has plans to gut public transportation and turn over as many assets as possible to private, unaccountable industries. The information in Project 2025 explains their ultimate goals, and the AFL-CIO created this informative website to explain the impacts on transportation and other public institutions.

We have two actions in this campaign:

-Enforce existing laws requiring freight railroads to prioritize Amtrak service and improve on-time performance
-Expand routes and increase frequency to better serve rural and underserved communities
-Ensure clean, safe, and reliable service by supporting the skilled workers who keep the system running
-Reject any proposals that would weaken Amtrak’s public mission or undermine labor protections
-Protect union jobs across the entire passenger rail system

Public rail is a public good—and it must be treated that way. A strong, well-funded Amtrak is essential to building a more connected, equitable, and sustainable future.
